Bio Marin is a company that specializes in trying to find new medication for orphan diseases. Biomarin sells five different drugs and all of those are created to help with orphan diseases. These orphan drugs are are pharmaceutical drugs that are specifically designed to treat these orphan diseases. An orphan disease is a disease that affects less than 200,000 people nationwide, so Biomarin is targeting a relativley small group of people. The company was founded in 1997 with an investment of one and a half million dollars by Glyko Biomedical. Biomarin has been around for 18 years and is now a world leader of biopharmaceuticals for orphan diseases. This field trip let me know how a real biotech company function. It let me see first hand how a company researches and produces products to help people with orphan diseases. It also showed me how many of the things that we had been learning in class were used in the real world. This field trip was overall very interesting and a great experience.
